Maus as a graphic novel is a great book. Maus made an outstanding impact on me with the great illustrations through out the book. I was impressed with how well the artist captured the story. it was great to have the pictures to complete the vision you would have in your head while reading this book. i don’t know how i will ever be able to go back to reading a normal book again with out thinking back to this book and wishing i could have the pictures to help complete this book. i believe that a graphic novel reaches more people in a deeper way than most other books do. when you read a book that has an illustration along with it it brings the rest of the reading to life in a way that a normal print book just cant do. even though it is very cartoon-ish it helps you feel a sense of realism.

from what i have read about Chris i have come to realize that i do not like him, i have zero respect for him and he makes me mad! the very fact that someone finds Chris admirable or interesting makes me mad. the story of a guy going into the Alaska wild and dies from starvation because he didnt pack enough food because he didnt tell any one where he was going and not enough suplies to get him through the winter, what an amazing man. yeah right. if just his plain stupidity wasnt enough to make you mad about him then take into consideration what he has done to his family and people he has met along the way in his travels. first of all he spend his parents money by going to get a college degree and then he never uses it to make money or to make the world a better place. he has never been able to take correction or direction in his whole life. he completely abandons his family that loves him because he is a snobby liberal pretty boy that wants attention from other people. he burns his money and then takes money from other people. he says he doesn’t want anything but the wild but he is constantly making bonds with other people and then leaving them just as they open up to him. in the book they try to explain these traits by saying he didn’t have the best relationship with his father because he cheated on his mother. Chis is such an over dramatic attention needing jerk that cant deal with athority or his own life.

My plan for my zine is to illistrate my first year at Purdue University. there has been a lot that has happened to me over the course of my 9 months. it has been such an experience that i would like to do a zine about it so i can remember it for as long as possible. on each and every page i plan on telling an important story that happened and then drawing a picture to go along with it. i plan on keeping it mostly up beat with maybe one or two serious things that have happened. i plan to cover my first night staying in the dorms and having to evacuate because of a fire alarm at 3 a.m and it being so GOD AWFUL HOT for the first three weeks down here. Maybe a few stories about how i met some people down here that are now my close friends. talk about my first final week where i went back to my hometown after each exam because i had a close friend die, and as a result i over slept for one of the exams and ended up having to take the whole thing in under 20 minutes. also covering my room mate experience and moving out after first semester. last but not least i will tell about what an extreamly hard month this has been with all of my assignments in ALL of my classes all coming at once and all being due within 4 weeks of getting back from spring break. all of the pictures will be hand drawn by me. those are my plans and i am excited about puting them on paper with some pictures.

I am enrolled the school of consumer and family sciences at Purdue University. My major is Hospitality and tourism management. One of the major deciding influences that got me into Hospitality and Tourism management was Oceans 11, oceans 12, and oceans 13. These three movies had a great impact in my life. I loved watching every second of all three movies just enjoying the places the characters went, and the things they saw. Though these movies made me think robbing a casino or museum was possible i quickly put that out of my head. Instead, I have decided to be on the inside of the casino making sure all the guests are happy, even if the guests are trying to rob the casino. In the first movie (oceans 11) i loved watching Terry Benedict as he walked around his hotel and casino making sure every thing was running smoothly and the gamblers and guests were happy. Even though Terry was the owner of the casino he still made time to check on the operation and be around. Although it will probably be a very long time, if ever, till i own a casino, i could still be the same as him. I would love to walk around in a suit and look important even though i really will only be making minimum wage, but i will be making people happy and i will love my job.

Being a General manager of a casino is my life goal and i didn’t even realize it before watching these movies. With every “Oceans” movie that came out i fell even more in love with the idea of running a casino. It seems kind of silly to pick a major life change from seeing a movie but that is what i want to do. With every class i take i am more certain that i will be happy with my career choice. Even if i don’t get to run a casino i would be happy with a hotel or even a golf course. I just want to get involved with people i can make happy by making their vacation a little better in anyway i can. I have a love for people and i love being around extravagant things such as the casinos or hotels or golf courses it makes me feel alive.

The amazing thing to me is that if i would have never seen these movies i could be coming to Purdue for a horrible major like Engineering or something i would hate to do the rest of my life. I couldn’t imagine a life with out Hospitality and Tourism Management in it. It is the reason i get up in the morning, it is the reason i stay up late studying for a test the next day. It is the reason i take classes that have nothing to do with hospitality, tourism, or management, i just take them so i can stay in the program that i love so much. I would like to think that Oceans 11 is the reason for all my future happiness.

I am fastened with the bible and all the stories in it. From the time I was a little child i remember listening to every word my Sunday school teacher would say. One of the most powerful stories that stuck with me and means the most to me is the story of Sampson. There are few days that go by that i don’t think of that story. So it would seem fitting to me that if i were to get a tattoo i would get one of Sampson. Not just any picture of Sampson i would get one that I have pictured in my head for quite some time. The most powerful part of the story is the part that i would have put in my skin for life. To me the most powerful part of the story is when Sampson is put out on display in front of all the Philistines and he is leaning between the two pillars with a cloth wrapped around his eyes to cover the gaping wholes of where his eyes used to be. Just the picture of a broken and deject man who has lost everything. A man who would give anything to be what he once was, and with a final grunt and the power of God comes through him and he destroys the pillars he was tied to and in doing so takes his own life and life of every Philistine in the building.

To me this is extremely powerful to me and that is why I would get it tattooed on my body. I feel that a tattoo should be something that is very meaningful to you. I see far too many tattoos a little butterfly on a girls ankle or the barb wire wrapped around a guys arm, and i think to myself, why? Does the butterfly represent a life changing experience, does it symbolize your life, or is it just a waste of ink on an other wise beautiful body of a women? When i see the barb wire on the arm of man that is often times well toned, a man who puts many hours into his body to make it the best he can, i wander what is the reasoning behind that. Did he do it because there was a reason? Did he simply do because he though it would make him look cool, like a man you don’t want to mess with.

To see those tattoos it makes me want to get the one of Sampson just so it would bring meaning back to tattooing. just so i can point to it and bring up the fact that that story has changed my life. that story means more to me that almost anything else. That story is a reason to get a tattoo. There is meaning to the person that is wearing it. In the end you have to realise that the ink under your skin will be there for life. So you better make sure it is something you can live with and see every day.

Summary:

Roger Sipher wrote an essay entitled “So That Nobody Has to go to School if They Don’t Want to.” and in this essay he explained his stance on mandatory attendance in public schools. He was strongly against it to say the least. He made many points as to why it should be done away with. Starting with the fact that if a student doesn’t want to be in class then they will make it harder on the students that do want to be there. He made a point that the teachers will be able to spend more time with the students that want to be there, rather than trying to force the ones that don’t want to be there to do their homework and learn. Another good point made was the fact if you start kicking kids out at a younger age that may encourage the students to start doing better in the beginning.

Paraphrasing:

Roger Sipher started his essay by drawing attention to the lower standardized test scores, then went on to explain how that was the result of mandatory attendance.

Quotation:

Roger Sipher say one of the benefits of getting rid of mandatory attendance would be “…grades would show what they are supposed to: how well a student is learning. Parents could again read report cards and know if their children were making progress.” (page 1)

The subculture I am involved in is one that i didn’t have much of a choice to be in. I was born into it. even though I didn’t have a choice weather or not to be in it I wouldn’t change it for the world. That subculture is being a P.K. or Pastors Kid. This obviously means my father is a pastor.

I am a pastors kid, with this subculture comes a few stereotypes. Some of which is that we are all “goodie goodies” which is not always the case or on the other hand some people may think that we are the worst kids in town and that we get away with anything just because of who our parents are. Now with any stereotype it comes from some truth, there are those pastor kids that are like Rod and Todd Flanders from the Simpsons and there are those kids who get in trouble and get right back out of it with out anyone knowing just because of who their father is but that is not exactly the case for all of us.

For the most part this subculture is what you want to get out of it. If you just have a mind to rebel and cause problems then you are going to be the bad kid that most people think of when they think of a pastors kid. If you have a mind to do exactly as you are told then you are going to be the good kid that doesn’t have any friends. It has been my experience that with most pastors kids they put on the good front for church every Sunday and do what they have to to not bring shame to their family but as soon as they grow up they want to get as far a way from the church and God as they can.

This is not me however; i love my Dad and my family i love my church and everything i have been through. I have come away with so many life lessons from going to hospitals with my dad and holding the hand of a young girl in a hospital bed surrounded by her family and watch as she dies and to look around the room and see the family sad but not without hope because they have their pastor there to comfort them. All my life lessons haven’t been bad ones there have been some good ones such as having a church picnic and spending time with people who are having a good time. I have learned how to behave in black tie events and funerals and weddings. in that aspect i feel i have had a rich upbringing.

These experiences are not unique to me i am sure. almost anyone in this subculture would tell you the same thing. even though for the most part this subculture is an individual kind of thing there are camps and getaways for just pastors kids which is a rich fulfilling experience as well spending time with people who are going through the same joys and disappointments as you are.
